2 cups Bentonite Clay
0.5 cup baking soda
0.5 cup activated hardwood charcoal
1.5 cups liquefied (juuuuust melted) Organic virgin coconut oil
5-6 TBS xylitol, dissolved in just enough boiling water for them to mostly melt
100+ drops liquid stevia or powdered stevia, to taste
My toddler prefers fruity flavors so she gets sweet orange essential oil, lemon essential oil, organic orange flavoring and organic vanilla extract
I prefer super minty flavors so I use peppermint and spearmint essential oils, peppermint extract, and menthol crystals (juuuust dissolved in a small amount of boiling water).
Where do you get this stuff????
Hardwood, food grade charcoal (for whitening, bought on Amazon here).
The other ingredients I found easily enough at local health food stores like Feel Rite and Wegman's.
2. Combine all dry ingredients into a medium sized bowl and stir.
3. Add liquefied coconut oil, dissolved xylitol and stevia to the mixture and gently stir WELL. Initially the charcoal will emit a little bit of a powder into the air- if you stir gently you'll minimize the mess potential
5. In her bowl I add roughly 20 drops each of sweet orange and lemon essential oils along with two teaspoons of organic orange flavoring I picked up in the natural baking section of my local health food store. I tasted it and added a little more powdered stevia til it was sweet enough for her liking.
5a. Fill two babyfood sized jars with the mixture. Use one and refrigerate the other until you need it.
6a. Fill mason or any repurposed jars with the mixture. Refrigerate whatever you don't use right away.
Viola! Toothpaste. Bonus points if you use a pretty jar. I like to put it into smaller jars to prevent it from getting too dried out and also cuts down on the re-dipping factor so it just keeps things cleaner. We each have our own jars and don't share- I think that's just as gross as sharing toothbrushes. Yuck.
Fair warning: it'll make a mess of your bathroom sink and it's a little weird getting used to black toothpaste. I like to think of it like those old plaque/tartar detection tablets from the 80s- your mouth will become BLACK when you brush and then you get to rinse your brush very well and brush away the last of the blackness before you're all done. My daughter loves it though!
